Mini-Grid Project Fuels Agricultural Hub in Mali

In the heart of Mali’s cotton belt lies Djine, an agricultural hub facing challenges due to limited access to reliable electricity. To address this, Kowry Energy is constructing a 69 kWp off-grid solar mini-grid system, complemented by a 70 kW generator154 kWh battery storage, and 300 smart meters. Set to be operational by July 2022, this project aims to electrify 3,000 residents40 businesses, and 10 public buildings, fostering economic growth and improving quality of life.

Catalyzing Economic Growth Through Sustainable Energy

Access to dependable electricity is crucial for Djine’s agricultural sector, particularly for cotton production, which is a significant contributor to Mali’s economy. By providing consistent power, the mini-grid enables:

  • Enhanced Agricultural Processing: Reliable energy allows for the operation of machinery essential for processing cotton and other crops, increasing efficiency and productivity.
  • Business Expansion: Electrification supports local enterprises, from grain mills to refrigeration services, enabling them to extend operating hours and improve services.
  • Improved Public Services: Schools and healthcare facilities can offer better services with stable electricity, contributing to the community’s overall well-being.

Aligning with Mali’s Rural Electrification Goals

This initiative aligns with Mali’s national strategy to increase rural electrification through decentralized solutions. The government, supported by international partners, is committed to expanding access to modern energy services in rural areas, recognizing that electrification is a key driver for economic development and poverty reduction.

Conclusion

Kowry Energy’s mini-grid project in Djine exemplifies how sustainable energy solutions can transform agricultural hubs, stimulate local economies, and enhance the quality of life in rural communities. By harnessing renewable energy, Djine is poised to become a model for rural development in Mali and beyond.
