Powering SMEs in Senegal

Kowry Energy’s Green Business Hub in Bani

In the small community of Bani, Southern Senegal, access to reliable and affordable electricity has long been a challenge for businesses and public institutions. To address this, Kowry Energy designed and implemented a 10 kWp off-grid solar energy system with a 7 kWh battery storage, 9 smart meters, and a 15 kVA backup generator. Fully operational since May 14th, this initiative electrifies seven productive-use customers and two public buildings, creating new economic opportunities for the community.

Developing Economic Potential with Renewable Energy

At the heart of this project is the “Green Business Hub”, a pilot initiative aimed at stimulating income-generating activities tailored to the local ecosystem. By providing stable, off-grid electricity, small businesses can operate efficiently, extend working hours, and reduce reliance on costly and polluting diesel generators.

Why Renewable Energy is Key for Rural Businesses in Senegal

1. Powering Productivity and Business Growth

Reliable energy enables businesses such as grain mills, cold storage facilities, and small workshops to function without frequent disruptions. This boosts productivity, increases revenues, and creates new job opportunities in rural areas.

2. Reducing Energy Costs and Fuel Dependence

Most rural enterprises in Senegal rely on diesel generators, which are not only costly but also subject to fluctuating fuel prices and supply chain challenges. By switching to solar power with battery storage, businesses lower operational costs and gain energy independence.

3. Supporting Senegal’s Electrification Goals

Senegal’s government is committed to achieving universal electricity access by 2025, with a focus on decentralized solutions. The Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency (ASER) promotes projects like this to accelerate rural electrification. Kowry Energy’s work in Bani directly aligns with these national objectives. 4. Creating Sustainable, Scalable Solutions

The Green Business Hub serves as a pilot model for future decentralized energy projects across Senegal and West Africa. By demonstrating how off-grid solar can power local economies, this initiative lays the groundwork for scaling similar projects in other underserved communities.

Conclusion

The Bani solar project exemplifies how decentralized renewable energy can unlock economic potential, enhance livelihoods, and contribute to Senegal’s sustainable development. By empowering local businesses and public institutions with clean, affordable energy, Kowry Energy is driving meaningful impact—one community at a time.
